About the Olympiad

Global Astronomy Olympiad (GAO)

Astronomy is the scientific study of everything beyond Earth's atmosphere, including planets, stars, galaxies, and celestial phenomena. It utilizes observation and physics to understand the evolution, motion, and composition of these bodies, covering everything from our solar system to the origins of the universe.

Key Aspects of Astronomy:
Observational Science: Astronomers collect data using telescopes and instruments across the electromagnetic spectrum (visible, X-ray, radio) to analyze celestial objects from afar.
What is Studied: Key targets include stars, planets, comets, galaxies, gas clouds, black holes, dark matter, and dark energy.

Key Fields of Study:
Astrophysics: Applies physics principles to understand how celestial bodies function.
Cosmology: Focuses on the origin and evolution of the universe.
Astrometry: Measures the precise positions and movements of stars.
Distinction from Astrology: While astronomy is a science, astrology is a belief system, not supported by scientific evidence, connecting celestial positions to earthly events.
